Pamela “Pam” Doove is a sweet young woman trying to get work as an actress. However, her efforts are damaged by the fact that when she tries to read lines, she ends up yelling them out incomprehensibly.

Inspiration[]

Pam Doove was based on a homeless woman who came into a newsagents that one of the writers was in, and said the mixed up gibberish that was used for the character. After she said it, the man at the till said "no", meaning this was likely a regular event there, and she left.

Appearances[]

Series 2[]

She tries out for a Greenwoods Orange Juice commercial with director Jed Hunter, who is stunned by her performance, although not in a good way. Despite this, she does end up being cast in the role.

Christmas Special[]

In the Christmas Special, we learn that Pam (and most of the female population of Royston Vasey) is a member of "Solutions" (although this is revealed in Charlie's dream, so it may not be factual).

Series 3[]

Pam eventually wins other roles as well, including that of a Nazi in Keith Drop's production of The Diary of Anne Frank.

Anniversary Specials[]

She eventually becomes a Shipping forecaster on a radio station, and is heard in the first anniversary special.

Live Shows[]

Live At Drury Lane[]

Pam appears in Act 1, auditioning for a play directed by Mark's character. She does Isabella's Plea from Measure to Measure in her typical style - after the speech, the director asks her if she is trained and she says she is not

...Are Behind You![]

In Act 1, Pam auditions for the Communativity that Legz Akimbo are putting on. She auditions for the Angel Gabriel - Dave Parkes, who is running the auditions, says Ollie (who cannot be there, for ‘obvious reasons’.) has decided that the character should speak in tongues. Pam, of course, does quite the opposite of this, speaking quite clearly. After two more attempts, Dave tells Pam she hasn't got the part, asking her to invite in the next auditionee. She does so, falling back into her typical incomprehensible style (which stuns Dave) before leaving.

Trivia[]

  • The Orange Juice Sketch was longer, including Pam and Jeff's character building - during rehearsals, Pam was to say the lines normally, but as soon as she is asked to perform she would go back to her gibberish.
  • A Local Book For Local People shows that Pam does have a history of stage acting, including a role in The Wiz.
  • The League wrote a whole story for her that Greenwoods Orange Juice used her for the advert, which was a big break for Pam. The advert is referenced multiple times in the series.
  • In 2020 Pam appeared on Twitter with Matt Lucas performing his "Baked Potato" song, in her usual style.
